War Heritage

NIKU has long-standing experience in war heritage and offers -interdisciplinary expertise on cultural remains from World War II and the Cold War.

Our work covers a wide spectrum — from material culture and landscapes to the transformation of discarded objects into valued heritage, the social contexts of wartime, and specialized conservation services.

We provide both research and commissioned services, including:

  • Surveying and mapping of individual sites and larger landscapes
  • Advanced documentation (photogrammetry, ground-penetrating radar, LIDAR, surveying, etc.)
  • Archaeological investigations to uncover buried or fragmented structures
  • Creation of 3D models of landscapes and war heritage sites such as bunkers, tunnels, and other structures
  • Knowledge collection and analysis
  • Recording and documentation of preserved painted surfaces
  • Color analysis to support restoration or rehabilitation projects
  • Condition surveys and conservation of painted surfaces, wall paintings, and decorative elements
  • Evaluation of heritage significance at international, national, and regional levels
  • Cultural-historical analyses and scientific knowledge development

Our team brings together archaeologists, conservators, architects, and social scientists — combining a breadth of expertise with specialized competence in cultural heritage.
