Environmental Monitoring of the Consequences of Climate Stress on Protected Buildings (Klima-MOV)

Although our oldest buildings have stood for nearly 1,000 years, a projected future with a warmer and wetter climate could have severe destructive consequences for these structures.

The environmental monitoring program “Environmental Monitoring of the Consequences of Climate related degrradation on Protected Buildings” aims to examine how climate change is affecting 45 of our oldest and most valuable buildings: 35 medieval structures across the country and 10 buildings located at the World Heritage sites of Røros and Bryggen in Bergen. The monitoring is planned to span nearly 50 years, but currently only a 10-year period has been contractually secured.

The project is commissioned by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage (Riksantikvaren). NIKU (Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research) is the project manager and works closely with its main partner, Mycoteam AS. The project also draws on expertise from the Maihaugen Museum Foundation, the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research, t Multiconsult ASA, Terje Berner & Co AS, Tore Granmo, and Uppsala University in Sweden.

The project leader is Bjørg Agasøster.
