Rock Art

NIKU has leading expertise in rock art in Northern Europe within research, management, and dissemination

NIKU has more than 25 years of experience in the research, documentation, management, and dissemination of rock art.

We carry out research-based digital documentation and condition assessments of rock art. In addition, we can perform or assist with the management and dissemination (facilitation, exhibitions) of rock art. In recent years, NIKU has also carried out survey assignments for rock art, where both rock carvings and rock paintings have been found.

We offer:

  • Documentation
  • Condition assessment and documentation
  • Dissemination
  • Surveying
  • Research

Digital visibility With the colour-enhancement software DStretch, one can see rock art that is not visible to the naked eye. In these images, you can, among other things, see that the frame patterns just below the elk become more distinct. Photo and colour enhancement: Jan Magne Gjerde, NIKU

Night workIt can be easier to see rock art clearly by using artificial lighting at night.
The motifs emergeThe contrast between the surrounding darkness and the artificial lighting makes the motifs stand out more clearly
Bergkunst i Innlandet A few years ago, a truly unique rock art discovery was made by a lake in Innlandet. The landscape around this lake has remained almost unchanged since the Stone Age. The experience of the rock art varies greatly between the summer and winter seasons. In this film, you will get a closer look at the rock art and learn more about the methods used to document it.
