Thomas Haupt is an architect (MArch/BSc Hons) from RGU in Aberdeen, Scotland and with a PhD from NTNU, Trondheim, Norway. He works as a Researcher II at NIKU´s office in Trondheim. In addition he is also a master stonemason, educated in Germany. Haupt has 35 years of experience with conservation and restoration of historic buildings and structures, both in design and practical execution.

Both as an architect and a stonemason, Haupt has been responsible for preparing condition reports and action plans for various conservation and restoration projects. He has experience from a wide range of projects, including detailed design work for both small and large buildings and structures. His areas of expertise include:

  • Industrial heritage: Haupt holds a PhD focused on structural principles, the history of construction technology, and the architecture of industrial buildings. He also contributed to the preparatory work for the UNESCO World Heritage nomination of the Rjukan and Notodden industrial sites.
  • Church conservation: Haupt has worked as a practitioner and contractor carrying out documentation and surveying, design work and specification of stone conservation projects, dressing of stones and general stonemasonry.

Haupt also works at NTNU (Department of Architecture and Technology) in Trondheim, where he is part of the Building Conservation and Transformation research group, which focuses on cultural heritage, existing buildings, and historic structures. There, he contributes to the education of architects and craftspeople.
