The find may shed new light on life and activity on the island during the monastic period.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<div class=\"post-date-container post-meta-container sm-all lm-all t-all sd-10of12 sd-margin-left-1of12 d-2of3 d-margin-left-1of6 cf\">\n\t<p class=\"post-date\">Published <time datetime=\"2025-10-02\">October 2, 2025<\/time><\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n<\/header>\r\n\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper paragraph\">\n<p>Archaeologists<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niku.no\/en\/ansatt\/regin-meyer\/\"> Regin Meyer<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niku.no\/en\/ansatt\/dag-oyvind-engtro\/\">Dag-\u00d8yvind Engtr\u00f8 Solem<\/a> from NIKU are conducting a research excavation at the Selja monastery and pilgrimage site. After just two days in the field, they made a remarkable discovery: masonry and flagstone flooring from a stone building that has never been documented before.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"facts-container sm-all lm-1of3 t-1of3 sd-1of4 d-1of3 right\">\n\t\t<div class=\"fact\">\n\t\t\t<p><strong>Selja Monastery and Saint Complex<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Location:<\/strong> Selja Island, Stad Municipality, Vestland County<br \/>\n<strong>Historical Significance:<\/strong> Norway\u2019s oldest known saint cult \u2013 associated with the legend of St. Sunniva and the Selja Men<br \/>\n<strong>Origin of the Saint Cult:<\/strong> According to the saga, Sunniva and her followers were shipwrecked on Selja in the mid-10th century. They hid in a cave and died as martyrs.<br \/>\n<strong>Ecclesiastical Development:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Olav Tryggvason is said to have discovered the saintly remains and built a church in 996<\/li>\n<li>Olav Haraldsson established the feast day <em>Seljumannamesse<\/em> in 1024<\/li>\n<li>Olav Kyrre founded Western Norway\u2019s first bishopric on the island around 1068<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Monastic Complex:<\/strong> The Benedictine monastery was gradually expanded throughout the 12th and 13th centuries<br \/>\n<strong>Sunniva Church:<\/strong> The ruins contain traces of an older stone church with Anglo-Saxon features<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper paragraph\">\n<p>\u201cThis is a ruin we haven\u2019t seen before, and it\u2019s located just 30 meters from the monastery. Last year, he identified remains of an Anglo-Saxon stone church within the ruins of St. Sunniva\u2019s Church \u2013 possibly one of Norway\u2019s very first stone buildings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper paragraph\">\n<p>You can read the research article about that exciting discovery <a href=\"https:\/\/publicera.kb.se\/meta\/article\/view\/22951\/20491\">here<\/a> (Norwegian).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper heading\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ground-penetrating-radar-revealed-hidden-structures\"><strong>Ground-Penetrating Radar Revealed Hidden Structures<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper paragraph\">\n<p>The current excavation is based on ground-penetrating radar surveys conducted by NIKU in 2021 and 2022. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper paragraph\">\n<p>These gave signals interpreted as possible archaeological structures beneath the surface.
