It is hosted on ESRI ArcGIS and is continuously updated with new data by the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research (NIKU).<\/li>\n<li>Data is delivered from different actors: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niku.no\/en\/\">NIKU,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntnu.edu\/museum\">The University Museum &#8211; NTNU<\/a> , <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vestfoldfylke.no\/no\/\">Vestfold County Municipality<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uis.no\/en\/museum-of-archaeology\">University of Stavanger &#8211; Museum of Archaeology<\/a>, and M\u00f8re og Romsdal County Municipality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper paragraph\">\n<p>Since 2007 and until today, several archaeological geophysical surveys have been carried out in Norway, and publicly available reports from these surveys are made available through NIKUs map service <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/dashboards\/7b5ac156802f4720a0da580fe6ee5be2\">argin.no<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper paragraph\">\n<p>\u2013 For NIKU alone, we are now approaching 250 different archaeological ground-penetrating radar studies, says Knut Paasche, head of NIKU&#8217;s Department of Digital Archaeology, \u2013 and all of these can be found in the Argin map service.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper paragraph\">\n<p>The mapping service provides a nice overview of areas in Norway where high-resolution archaeological geophysical surveys have been conducted. Paasche promises that the map is user-friendly and easy to use:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper paragraph\">\n<p>You can zoom in all the way to your own neighborhood, and surveys can be sorted by year. The map service should be particularly useful for cultural heritage management, agriculture, landowners, developers and others involved in land-use planning work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper paragraph\">\n<p>\u2013 For example, during planning processes of large development projects, this is a useful map service,&#8221; Paasche points out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper paragraph\">\n<p>He further emphasizes the benefit of having data from archaeological georadar studies easily accessible:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper paragraph\">\n<p>\u2013 With this service we hope to contribute to working smarter and avoiding doing the same work twice. Why spend unnecessary resources to explore something where the data already exists.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper paragraph\">\n<p>According to Paasche, it is not a given that it is known if and where NIKU or other actors have already conducted georadar studies. With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/dashboards\/7b5ac156802f4720a0da580fe6ee5be2\">agrin.no <\/a>one can easily check whether there already exists data on an area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper paragraph\">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"facts-container sm-all lm-1of3 t-1of3 sd-1of4 d-1of3 right\">\n\t\t<div class=\"fact\">\n\t\t\t<p><strong>The development of geophysical survey methods in Norway:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2007: At a seminar in <a href=\"https:\/\/vestfoldmuseene.no\/midgard-vikingsenter\/en\">Midgard Viking Center<\/a> in Vestfold, Austrian geophysicist <a href=\"https:\/\/homepage.univie.ac.at\/immo.trinks\/\">Immo Trinks<\/a> presented archaeological geophysics, which proved to yield significant results.<\/li>\n<li>2010: Large-scale motorized geophysical survey methods were first used in Norway. This occurred through the research project <a href=\"https:\/\/archpro.lbg.ac.at\/forschungsprogramm\/?lang=en\">Ludwig Boltzmann Institute Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology (LBI-ArcPro)<\/a>, in which NIKU participated.<\/li>\n<li>2015: NIKU gets its first large-scale motorized ground-penetrating radar.<\/li>\n<li>2025: NIKU and others will publish the book \u201cArkeologisk geofysikk i Norge\u201d (Archaeological Geophysics in Norway) through &#8220;Cappelen Damm Akademisk&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper heading\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-highly-qualified-norwegian-expertise-in-archaeological-geophysical-surveys\">Highly qualified Norwegian expertise in Archaeological geophysical surveys<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper paragraph\">\n<p>Archaeological geophysics has significantly developed in Norway, with several actors contributing to this progress. Since the early 1960s, attempts have been made to use geophysical surveys in Norwegian archaeology. However, it was only after 2007, when the Austrian geophysicist and archaeologist Immo Trinks showed us that this really worked, archaeological geophysics truly began to yield results.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper paragraph\">\n<p>From the outset, the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research (NIKU) has been a key player in archaeological geophysical surveys. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntnu.edu\/museum\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntnu.edu\/museum\">The University Museum &#8211; NTNU<\/a> has also been at the forefront of this field. Subsequently, other actors have joined in, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vestfoldfylke.no\/no\/\">Vestfold County Municipality<\/a>, Archeological Museum at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uis.no\/en\/museum-of-archaeology\">University of Stavanger &#8211; Museum of Archaeology<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/mrfylke.no\/\">M\u00f8re og Romsdal County Municipality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"text-wrapper paragraph\">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"facts-container sm-all lm-1of3 t-1of3 sd-1of4 d-1of3 right\">\n\t\t<div class=\"fact\">\n\t\t\t<p><strong>Methods NIKU \u2013 digital archaeology uses<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We employ traditional registration, documentation, and drawing techniques combined with a visual, spatial, and digital 3D environment.<\/li>\n<li>Our methods include laser scanning from both aerial and ground perspectives, image-based modeling (photogrammetry), and Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI).<\/li>\n<li>For archaeological geophysical surveys, we utilize ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and magnetometers.<\/li>\n<li>Interested in viewing examples from our previous projects?
