The correct restoration of old buildings requires thorough preparation and expertise in construction history surveys. The purpose of a traditional colour survey is often to arrive at a colour pallet and d\u00e9cor that is as close to the original appearance as possible for the period you have chosen to return it to.<\/p>\n

From a purely practical perspective the work consists of uncovering the materials attached to the outside of the building’s load-bearing structure. So-called ‘colour steps’ or a narrow strip of an uncovered layer of paint show the colour history of a specific location in a building.<\/p>\n
The survey can also be performed by studying a cross-section of the paint under a microscope. When painted d\u00e9cor is found, such as veining, marbling or lines or stencilling, larger areas should be uncovered to obtain a correct impression of the variations in colour and pattern.<\/p>\n
The results of the surveys are combined with information from historical sources that assist with interpretation and dating. Customer reports will usually contain detailed overviews of a building’s decorative and construction history.<\/p>\n
A large number of colour analyses are recorded in our NIKU’s database of colours and d\u00e9cor in older buildings. NIKU’s colour experts can, using information from previous analyses, also provide advice on the correct use of colours and materials for the historical style where parts of the historical source materials have been lost.<\/p>\n
