International workshop on polychrome wood

Curators, collections and building managers, conservators, conservation scientists, policy makers and researchers are all invited to attend the workshop “Allowable microclimatic variations for polychrome wood” 18 - 19 February 2010.

The workshop “Allowable microclimatic variations for polychrome wood” is a joint event of COST Action IE0601 “Wood Science for Conservation of Cultural Heritage” and the research project “Establishing standards for allowable microclimatic variations for polychrome wood” implemented by the Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences in Krakow and The Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research (NIKU) in Oslo, Norway.

The Polish Norwegian project “Establishing standards for allowable microclimatic variations for polychrome wood” (2007-2010) is supported by a grant from Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway through the European Economy Area Financial Mechanism .

The main aim of the project has been to broaden information on the variations of air parameters that are safe for the painted wooden surfaces. This is done mainly by direct monitoring the physical damage of the paint layers on the wooden supports using advanced laser techniques. The measurements in the laboratory and in historic buildings in Norway and Poland have been complemented by computer modelling.

Experts in the field, as well as those involved in the project will contribute to the program.
